Dr. Arjun Makhijani
President, Institute for Energy and Environmental Research
Arjun Makhijani is President of the Institute for Energy and Environmental Research in Takoma Park, Maryland. He earned his Ph.D. from the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences at the University of California, Berkeley, specializing in nuclear fusion. A recognized authority on energy issues, Dr. Makhijani is the author and co-author of numerous reports and books on energy and environment related issues. Dr. Makhijani has testified before Congress, and has appeared on ABC World News Tonight, the CBS Evening News, CBS 60 Minutes, NPR, CNN, and BBC, among others. He has served as a consultant on energy issues to utilities, including the Tennessee Valley Authority, the Edison Electric Institute, the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, and several agencies of the United Nations.
Prof. Man-Sung Yim
Department of Nuclear Engineering, NCSU
Dr. Yim is currently an associate professor of nuclear engineering at North Carolina State. He received his Ph.D. in nuclear engineering from the University of Cincinnati, continuing on to obtain an S.M. in Environmental Health Science and an Sc.D. in Radiological Health from Harvard University. Dr. Yim believes that safe and successful nuclear waste management is essential for the future of nuclear energy. The goals of his research work are socially acceptable nuclear waste disposal and effective use of risk analysis for relevant decision-making. Research works include nuclear waste source term analysis, environmental dose assessment, developing new risk analysis methodologies amenable to public risk communication, novel techniques for very long-term isolation of nuclear wastes, investigation of nuclear waste transmutation, development of strategies for public perception and attitude change. Mathematical/ statistical modeling, experimental investigations, engineering optimization, decision theoretic approaches, and artificial neural networks are implemented in these works.
Prof. Rick Kearney - NCSU
Dr. Kearney is currently the director of the School of Public and International Affairs at North Carolina State. He is an authority on political science and public policy issues with a focus on environmental policy - including "green collar"jobs and climate change. Kearney served as professor and chair of the Department of Political Science at East Carolina University for eight years. He directed the Master of Public Affairs program and the Institute of Public and Urban Affairs at the University of Connecticut from 1990 to 1998. He began his career at the University of South Carolina in 1978, and left as a full professor in 1990. Kearney holds a Ph.D. in political science and a master’s degree in public administration from the University of Oklahoma. His scholarly and applied research focuses on public administration, state and local politics, and public policy. He specializes in human resource management, labor relations, and state and local government. He is co-author of State and Local Government.
