Lyle Estill

Piedmont BioFuels

Lyle Estill is VP of Stuff at Piedmont Biofuels, and has won numerous awards for his work in the biodiesel business. Estill is the author of numerous articles, essays, and blog entries, including the books, Small is Possible: Life in a Local Economy and Biodiesel Power: the Passion, People and Politics of the Next Renewable Fuel. Far from a third party account, Biodiesel Power comes from one who has experienced it from the grease dumpster to the boardroom. Lyle Estill has made the journey from back yard brewing, to being part of a producer and distributor cooperative, to commercial production.

 

Prof. Sarah Sharma

Department of Communication Studies, UNC-CH

Dr. Sharma received her BA at the University of British Columbia (Political Science), her MA at the University of Westminster (International Relations and Contemporary Political Theory), and her PhD at York University (Communication and Culture). Dr. Sharma's research and teaching focuses on the relationship between technology, changing conceptions of space and time, and the public sphere. Her research draws from diverse theories and methods including medium theory, post-structuralism, identity politics, biopolitics, critical discourse analysis, and ethnomethodologies.

Tracy Dixon

NCSU Sustainability Coordinator

Tracy was hired in April 2008 to provide leadership and coordination of the newly created University Sustainability Office.  Tracy has been in the sustainability field for over 9 years and knows NC State well.  She received her joint Masters in Public Administration and Natural Resources from NC State where her research focused on regional sustainability. She received her BS in Natural Resources from NC State as well. Previous to coming to NC State she worked as a Program Manager for Advanced Energy, an Environmental Analyst for the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, a Legislative Assistant for the House Majority Leader in the NC General Assembly and in public relations for the NC Museum of Natural Sciences.  Tracy has served on the board of directors for Triangle Net Impact, the NC Sustainable Energy Association and the Community Green Guide. She is a member of Triangle Emerging Green Builders, the NC Green Power Speakers Bureau and the National Association of Environmental Professionals.

Steve Kalland

Executive Director, NC Solar Center

Steve Kalland, director of the North Carolina Solar Center, has over 12 years of experience in energy policy, particularly with renewable energy and energy efficiency. His current activities include directing the Solar Center's Policy Division as well as leading efforts to develop new research and programmatic opportunities for the Solar Center.  Previously, Mr. Kalland served as project manager with McNeil Technologies, Inc. of Springfield, VA. Areas of emphasis included renewable energy programs support for the Department of Energy, as well as work with several NGOs, foundations, private companies and state energy offices on energy, transportation, and climate change policy issues. Mr. Kalland is a past executive director of the Maryland-DC-Virginia Solar Energy Industries Association (MDV-SEIA), the regional chapter of the national Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA). MDV-SEIA is a nonprofit trade association founded in 1984 to promote the economic application and public understanding of solar energy. Before that, Mr. Kalland was the director of State Programs and Policy Analysis at SEIA.
