The Africana Studies Undergraduate Major
A Bachelor of Arts Degree in Africana Studies (click HERE for degree information) was implemented in January 2006. Students should contact the Student Services Coordinator, Hope Ziglar or the program director, Dr. Sheila Smith McKoy for application procedures.
Africana Studies Minor (Click Here for Application)
Students who add the Africana Studies Minor to their undergraduate Major will develop a good foundation for understanding the Africana experience.

Africana Studies courses and activities will expose students to the historical and comparative patterns of life, labor, culture, development and social protest of peoples throughout the African Diaspora. The Minor complements virtually every major available throughout the university.
Fifteen (15) Credit Hours are required for the Minor in Africana Studies. The three required courses are:
- AFS 240 - African Civilizations
- AFS 241 - Introduction to African American Studies
- AFS 342 - Introduction to the African Diaspora
- Elective Course (from AFS Curriculum)
- Elective Course (from AFS Curriculum)
The Undergraduate Self-Designed Major
Students interested in a more flexible degree program designed to meet more specific needs may create their own Major through the Self-Designed Degree in Multidisciplinary Studies. Thirty credit hours are required for the Major in Multidisciplinary Studies. Further information on this major can be found on the website for the Self-Designed Major.
