How to Apply

Students desiring to enter the MALS program submit an online application for admission to the Graduate School. Admission requirements for the MALS program include an undergraduate baccalaureate degree and the submission of application materials, which include the online application and fee, three references, transcripts, and a 4- to 5-page written statement of the student's objectives in doing the MALS degree. GRE scores are not required.

The written statement of objectives is an important part of your application materials and consists of two parts. In the first, you should describe in as much detail as possible your reasons for wanting to do the MALS degree and how your life experience has led you to this particular degree. The statement of objectives will also function as a writing sample for the admission committee’s evaluation.

The second part of the written statement should contain a preliminary list of the courses for your concentration and the reasons you have selected them.. This is not a final plan and may be altered. The reasons should consider the interdisciplinary nature of the degree and how these courses will work synergistically to provide you with the sort of education you desire in the MALS degree.

Your references should include any teachers from whom you have taken courses within the last five years. If you do not have enough former instructors for the three references, you may pick other types of people who are in a good position to judge your abilities and motivation - employers, supervisors, pastors, co-workers, etc. If the referee has not taught you in a course, they may submit a personal letter rather than use the reference form provided in the application packet.

The deadline for applications for the spring semester is Oct.1 and for summer or fall semesters it is March 1.

All applicants will be contacted to schedule a required on-campus interview with the MALS program director or a member of the MALS Advisory Committee. Application decisions are made by the MALS Admissions Committee composed of NCSU faculty members and must be approved by the Graduate School.

The MALS program is administered by the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHASS) at NCSU.

The tuition and fees required for this program are moderate and vary according to the number of hours taken each semester. These fees are listed in the NCSU Graduate Bulletin and are available from the cashier's offices . In addition, there is an application fee. All published tuition and fee schedules are subject to change.
