Minor in Arts Studies

Students who pursue a minor in arts studies have many different objectives, such as:

• Creating a foundation for further work in the arts.
• Linking the arts to their major and even perhaps doing studio work that combines media.
• Exploring the aesthetic dimensions of a contemporary technology.
• Probing the connections between works of art and their context.

Requirements

• Complete 18 credit hours in arts studies with a grade of C or better.
• Select arts studies courses that balance three kinds of work:
  • The history of artforms, styles and their cultural settings.
  • The analysis and criticism of art and the theory of art
  • The creation or performance of works of art.

Students can construct their minor from a range of courses. For a listing, refer to foundation courses, linking courses and capstone courses under the arts studies major. This list is suggestive of possibilities and not exhaustive. The headings “studio,” “production” and “performance” identify courses offering creative or performance opportunities.

A maximum of one course may be used (double-counted) towards both this minor and departmental major requirements.

Admission

Students can apply for admission to any university minor program in MyPack Portal. Admission will be based on the student’s academic record, and in most cases no longer requires departmental review.

Certification

Students must complete the minor no later than the semester in which they expect to graduate. Students can monitor their progress toward completing the minor by viewing their Minor Degree Audit online, anytime, in MyPack Portal. 

Please note that the minor degree audit does not track whether students are in compliance with double-counting limitations between major requirements and minor requirements. Therefore, students should not rely solely on the minor degree audit. They should refer to the detailed requirements outlined on the official university minors website for guidance and reach out to the minor advisor listed there to discuss course plans and ensure they’re on track.
