Study Abroad Inspires Global Pursuits

For NC State alumna Megan (McNulty) Le, study abroad was the catalyst for a global career and the lifelong pursuit of international experiences. As an Alexander Hamilton Scholar, Le studied Business Management and Latin American Studies while minoring in Spanish, earning her dual degrees from Poole College of Management and the College of Humanities and Social Sciences in 2002. A study abroad program in Costa Rica during the summer of 2001 sparked a desire in her to do something different and expand her worldview.

Opening the Door to Study Abroad

A new College of Humanities and Social Sciences pilot program aims to encourage more students from underrepresented groups to study abroad for the first time. Kickstarted by a $25,000 NC State University Foundation grant, the Travel Scholars pilot program will help some underrepresented students pay for study abroad and inform others about what resources are available.

Adventurer in a Tweed Jacket

Professor Emeritus David Greene is a prolific scholar and author, a gifted and giving musician, a highly skilled and sensitive translator, and a dedicated and cherished volunteer. In his retirement, Greene works to improve the lives of those around him: the children and villagers of eastern Guatemala, where Greene lives, teaches and writes for two thirds out of each year. For his work there, NC State’s Association of Retired Faculty recently recognized Greene with the Friday Award for Distinguished Service in Retirement.

Laken Geiger is a junior with a major in Communication and minor in Arts Entrepreneurship. She has had several media and arts-related internships, and spent Spring 2014 studying in Prague. She is a member of the Public Relations Student Society of America and Habitat for Humanity.

Donors Help Top Students Reach Their Potential

The College of Humanities and Social Sciences continues to grow as a destination college for talented, top-ranked students from across our state and beyond. Merit scholarships play a critical part in attracting and retaining such students. This year, CHASS awarded more than 100 merit-based scholarships across all its disciplines. A number of scholarship students were able to thank their donors at the college's 2014 Scholarship Luncheon.

February Student of the Month

Elizabeth Medlin is a double major in International Studies and Spanish, with a Political Science minor. She participated in the NC State Ethnographic Field School in Guatemala (Summer 2013) and is an intern for the NC Immigrant Rights Project. Active in student groups, honor societies and research, she plans to attend law school for immigration law.
